Foil & Metallic Wrapping Paper

There is metallic ink, and there is foil, and they are not close. Metallic ink is a suspension of particles in a binder and it always looks slightly grey next to the real thing. Hot foil is a mirror-finish film stamped into the sheet under heat and pressure, and it catches light the way nothing printed can.

The counter-intuitive part is the stock. Foil looks best on uncoated matte paper, not on gloss, because the contrast between a dead-flat ground and a mirror mark is what the eye reads as expensive. On gloss stock the foil has nothing to be brighter than.

Foil is blocked from a magnesium die, so there is a one-off die cost per design and then the run itself is cheap. It suits a mark or a border rather than a full-coverage pattern; full-coverage foil exists and costs what you would expect.
